Become a Garden Friend!

Are you interested in volunteering in an educational garden?

Looking to learn a bit with some hands-on practice?

Or just want to meet other gardeners from around the county doing a task you all love?

Become a Garden Friend at the SOREC Demonstration Gardens. Volunteer alongside Master Gardeners in maintaining our public demonstration gardens! These gardens are used for educational classes and enhancing gardeners’ learning.

(coming soon!)

What does the day look like?

We start our Wednesday mornings at 9:00am at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center (SOREC).

Sign in at the main office before you meet up with the Master Gardener Garden Education Mentor, your G.E.M., in the garden you are volunteering in.

Each day will be a little different, but some common tasks include weeding, transplanting, mulching, and pruning.

Around noon, we have a snack break in our Gathering Garden. Snacks and beverages are provided. This is a great time to chat with folks maintaining the other gardens.

Remember to sign out when you are done for the day.

What to do before you start volunteering?

Before you jump to volunteering in the gardens, there are a couple of things to do.

To start off, make sure your tetanus shot is up to date. Tetanus lives in the soil, and we want to make sure were all safe playing in the dirt.

Next, reach out to Grace Florjancic to get connected with a Garden Education Mentor, a GEM, to work with in the gardens.

On your first day volunteering, you will fill out the volunteer liability waiver and code of conduct paperwork.
